ENG 440 Final Paper
Efficiency on Hiatus
Salma Akhtar is amongst hundreds who are facing the crisis of perpetual power failures Dhaka. Bangladesh is still a developing economy but its capital Dhaka has seen massive urbanization over the past couple of years. The population has increased exponentially as well and most migrate to Dhaka for a better lifestyle. The situation is becoming worse without any sight of a solution. People’s lives depend on electrical power: they are the veins that construct society. From Dhanmondi’s residential areas to the commercial districts of Mirpur – Dhaka has become synonymous with power crisis.
“ Me and my wife don’t stay at home during the day because we have to work,” explains Md. Shahidul Islam, who is a chauffeur with his wife working in a garment factory. He lives in Mirpur, Pirerbhag, and it is not pleasant for him to go home after he has finished work. “ I go home late in the evening and there is no gas. There is no water either. We have to wait until the electricity comes back to prepare our dinner. Many a times I can’t take a shower. The electricity goes away up to three times at night and we can’t sleep.”
“ We only have electricity one to two hours a day.” States Mr Shonkor, a resident of Shaidabagh in the sweeper colony, “ Our own taps have dirty water so the Army and WASA has to give us water. They do so from nine to five each day. We had complained to the City Corporation but they told us measures were being taken to help us.”
On the 11th of April of this year the traffic of Mohakhali-Gulshan link road was affected for an hour for angry protestors taking to the street. According To The Daily Star issue of 12th April, people took to the streets with empty water holders and banners to state how frustrated they are to not receive a proper water supply. The same incident had occurred a week ago as citizens took to the same route protesting against the same cause.
“ It’s too bad.” Commented Md. Rafiuddin Bablu, Managing Director of Modhumita Cinema Hall in the Mirpur district, “ The electricity goes away more than two times a day. Most floors in my building have their personal generator. We have to pay 2000-4000 Tk. Worth of watt to compensate for the times the electricity goes away. We need generators to make equipment function such as elevators. Those who do not have generators have to climb up the stairs. It is very frustrating to have to do such things in the business areas – Mirpur is the heart of business in our country and if our government wishes to keep the blood-supply running then they will have to take action now.” Of course, it is not only the generators that increase the costs. Ms Salma Akhtar talks of the mayhem the residential areas have to endure due to the unreliability of power in Kuchukhet, “ Most people are happy when the electricity comes back for an hour then they start rushing to do all their chores and soon enough the circuits cannot take this extra pressure. Some people might have switched on their ACs or others are going for a shower or using water for other purposes so our building’s pump gets damaged. Our landlord had to buy a new one. Obviously, with such electric fluctuations any electronic device can go out of service.” She further states that other electronic devices can get damaged through the same means. Due to such reasons people will be adding more costs into their lives rather than alleviating them.
“ I usually work for 12 hours,” speaks Md. Belal Hossain, who is a CNG driver, “ I need to take gas twice during my rounds but there is not enough gas for all of us. It’s frustrating to sit 3-4 hours in a queue just for some gas – sometimes the person in front of me gets more gas than me because he came first. Some people even cut into the queue causing major hassles already within a hassle. I use to make Tk. 1500-1600 per day now that’s become only Tk. 1000. Many a times I want to take more customers but I cannot because there is not enough gas. So, I sit around. Sometimes I can’t go into areas where there is no electricity as it might become too dangerous thus I lose customers. I sometimes don’t even find gas at all in one pump thus I lose valuable hours by going around seeing if I can go somewhere else.”
"The present government has taken effective steps to import electricity on an urgent basis from India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and China," The Daily Star had quoted Prime Mister Sheikh Hasina’s efforts to reduce power shortages on 26th April, "We are aware of your sufferings," she spoke on the people’s problems. "Let me assure you this government will not leave any stone unturned to increase power and gas production." On April 27th The Daily Star also had quoted the PM on the new developments to increase energy efficiency by the means on coal mining in the pits from Barapukuria. “ Some people suggest it is possible to set up power plants of 10,000 megawatt capacity, some suggest it could be 15,000 megawatt. The power ministry may make a presentation on exactly what could be done with the Barapukuria coal.”
The PM had stated, as recorded by The Daily Star on the 3rd of April last year, "When we came to power in 1996, country's total power generation was only 1600 megawatt (MW) which was increased to 4,300 MW during our five-year tenure. We had adopted a power policy that electricity generation would be increased estimating the total national demand every year,"
The PM also stated: "But, unfortunately, the BNP-led four-party alliance did not follow our power policy. The alliance government did not install a single power plant in its tenure."
On the 27th The Daily Star Business section also informed the public of five deals being signed on power plants which are meant to be up commissioned by August 2011. The two foreign companies, plan to build five plants that will produce 420 megawatts. M
“ Many of my friends have to study with candles.” states Al-Amin Porosh, who asks people he meets of their struggles with power failures, “ They try to cope up with their chargers not having enough charge due to the lines always being cut off. Some of them do not have enough money to buy candles even. Some of my friends have generators but there’s no use in having them as they cannot supply efficient power throughout the house – if guests come they might have to study in another room that might have the lights but no fan. Even our photocopy store complained how they can’t do business in the evenings anymore due to power failures.” Ms Salma Akhtar experiences the inconveniences of her household due to power failures, “ It’s because we keep extra boiled water for drinking that we make it through the day. We use that to wash ourselves. In the heat it’s hard to concentrate on studies. A few days ago there was a session in our neighbourhood concerning load shedding and how stores should not be open after 8pm. A few days later there was a session on too much load shedding. We were told we might have ‘Digital Bangladesh’ as a topic in our HSC exams – we don’t have water or electricity it is comical that we still use such terms”
“ I think the government is trying to better the situation,” speaks Sheikh Nesar Ahmed Chowdhury, who has kept shop in Dhanmondi for 11 years, “ I only switch on the generator when I need to but when it is cooler I don’t.” When asked about the power cuts he seemed energetic and hopeful, “ There is no point in being frustrated. The government has confessed that there isn’t enough power for all of us. I think that by making more power stations the situation can be resolved. We are running on an old power station anyway. We need to make new ones then we can somehow manage the situation.” On asking him about his business he states, “ When the electricity goes away I don’t sell ice-cream. I tell my customers that I can’t open the refrigerator nor else all the ice-cream will eventually melt. We manage. Power failures do not bother us as they use to before.”
Promised Innovations or the increase of a crisis that has already been suffocating our country’s progression and happiness? It is hard to declare if the power plants would be in successful. But what of now? What of people like Mr Shonkor who do not get clean water and must have it given to him by delivery? What of students like Ms Salma Akhtar, who are losing vital time and energy? The situation must be resolved somewhat now nor else what is considered an hiatus now will be a permanent malady in our everyday lives.

Precious The Movie

Your home is not what it is supposed to be - How would you feel when your father rapes you and you have have already given birth to his first child and are awaiting the arrival of the second? How would you feel that despite all this your mother treats you as her slave and also abuses you sexually, physically and emotionally? In all of this how would you feel when your school tells you you are no longer fit to be in their institution due to the fact that you are pregnant a second time?
Clarice "Precious" Jones goes through this. Raped by her father and abused by her mother Precious becomes frustrated and angry with the world. She lives in abuse, poverty and illiteracy. She must also fight the prejudice of society seeing that she is looked upon as a fat, illiterate, black sixteen year old girl from Harlem. All Precious wants is another life.
But Precious is beautiful and smart. Her principal encourages her to try a special school and Precious, despite her mother cursing her as nothing but a dumb girl, dares to go to the school and further her education.
It is in this school that she meets Ms. Blue Rain. Ms. Blue Rain notices that Precious is traumatized and that she believes that she cannot accomplish anything. Ms. Blue Rain tells her to "Push Herself" so that she might get liberated from all the negativities that surround her life. She gives Precious hope for herself and hope for the future.
The movie Precious is based on the novel Push by the author Sapphire. It is, as I later read in Wikipedia, based on Sapphire's own experiences as a teacher in Harlem. The movie is a realistic masterpiece. The actors exude their roles with the efficiency and excellence that make you think they are the characters they portray. Precious's life is sad and heartbreaking. She slaves all day to please her mother who in turn blames her for their father not being at home. She also despises Precious and her children to the extent that she only desires to make Precious her servant and feed herself from Welfare. Precious attempts to find happiness in school but that never works out due to her mother's insistence she is dumb. But this movie is the journey of Precious from being enslaved to being liberated from all that enslaves her.
The artist Mo'Nique who portrays Precious's mother does a great role - she is believable in her sadomasochistic character and also in her cruelties concerning the very being of Precious who she subjugates. Precious is played by newcomer, Gabourey Sidibe, and she too executes her role with brilliance. There is the notable appearances by the artists Mariah Carey and also Lenny Kravitz.
Overall, Precious is a film that dares the abused to dream, love and be courageous enough to escape and triumph over their abusers and give them a taste of their own disease. It also dares us to be courageous enough to help those in need and to never abandon our dreams and individualism. The movie depicts systems that fail and families who have failed due to perversions and poverty. Precious's journey is one that will truly touch the very core of your soul.

Gig Draft
I am an artist. Who would believe this? I don’t think anyone would. That is because I can’t paint. I can’t sketch. I can’t draw period. I can dream. I can write a bit. I can talk. Now you will definitely be justified to question: “How are these aspects pertaining to an artist?”
I guess I have no argument. No defences. Maybe: just a desire? And all I can repeat and say that I think I am an artist or – I am an artist.
I know we are back to square one. I know this is an endless cycle and doesn’t have any value in repetition as it does not sort out the paradigm I had injected. It doesn’t leave room for any thought flux – any exploration – but I still felt like saying it.
This might be entitled as a foolish process. An individual’s methodology to escape the considered common or the considered canon by comprising with reality and living in the delirious state of hypersensitivity and hyperreality: only to exceed in the process of doing such superseding tasks. I know this not make sense. Hell – it might only make sense to the puppet.
The puppet, in case you didn’t notice, would be the speaker – in this case “I” as in infinity in the nutshell of a universe that has “I”’s in the mortal fluxes of immortality-pseudo-realities. If that didn’t make much sense don’t blame me. You are not thinking hard enough. Also, we have somewhat digressed but put it plainly you were doubting my ability to be coherent but now you are listening to me. Insanity does have some literacy be it political or psychological or otherwiseical. No I’m not making fun of you but rather illustrating the fact of today’s public and privates. We are stimulated by the ardent orchestration of the bizarre. It might be a postmodern thing, modernist thing, feminist, masculinist thing, humanist thing, psycheist thing or the ist of ist thing but don’t worry this digression has some roots to the philosophy of me being mad thus it is rooted to the main topic – yes, it resemble plant like roots and everything has interconnectivity – so, yes, where were we – yes you are fascinating by my ingenious idiotism but don’t worry it’s only natural to admire and laugh at fools – they even come up in the Taro deck!
Now you might think I am acting like an ass which is usually regarded higher in standard than the fool but then again I must say that is an accomplishment in itself so thanks for such an opportunity. No – wait – don’t give me a tiresome speech of madness because we had gone through that and you and I both agreed that I had insanity coursing through my veins and brains (though in actually like double monitors and keyboards I think this means two hemispheres than the 2x because that would be too simplistic and bizarre, though we revel in bizarreness I mean there are limitations to the dosages of what drug is your fix, now let’s take care to remember the 2x rule – no, no, no no imposition here I just want to get matters straight to a reasoning that would benefit us both so yes no commands here though the I think I would love to assume being an ideologue for the dominatrix/dominator but let’s forget that for now – ok do not worry safe sex is the best option when considering excess kinkiness and let’s not digress but then again I was the one saying we are not digressing so I think I am being foolish right now speaking otherwiseist like but that’s ok ‘cause I am human too and can be seduced by all things others can be seduced by and such and...ok this is not total digression nor else I wouldn’t be speaking it but then again who knows?) But that is the apprehension. I know this so – am I doing a known evil. I cannot say. I cannot say though I know it annoys you. But truthfully maybe I haven’t thought about it much – ok ok I know you are pissed now but seriously I know I know I am contradicting myself so yes I know I’m pissing you off but then again why wouldn’t I be pissing you off? Ok no, those were not my initial intentions but I haven’t got to piss off people much so it is actually fun pissing you off but then again this pissing off is a digression-dead-root not healthy nutritional so I’ll let it snap off like some dead root (plants may do this) but then again this is no nihilist interest it is just there. Ok now let us go back to where we started. Yes Yes I remember where we left off so it’s no biggie that I digressed. Because Digressions are the gig-lamps of life.
Theoretically anyway. Many might argue this approach I have but then again 0.5% or 0.2% would not. No, no this is not nihilistic as in in the process of the gig-lamps of life is surely not my own coined term, let’s think of Woolf and then continue – if she was nihilistic then her words are not my own and of the 0.5% and 0.2% some may actually ingrain this though as a nihilistic paradigm I say “Not my fault – that’s their drug to devour and not my own”: I thought I should clarify some of these things so don’t look so crossed at me. You can’t deny if I didn’t have these clarifications could not been done then we wouldn’t have had any proper understanding.
Now. As I said only 0.5% and 0.2% would actually think of the gig-lamps-is-digression theory. Distractions compose like. How? Well you might even think of this conversation as one – no I’m not saying you are not a focused individual because this is a wrong philosophy to think that distractions and digressions sans focus because if we look closer a mechanic’s tea-time may need focus too a> The mechanic may still be thinking about work or home or love or any other issues at hand and b> The mechanic savouring the tea is indirect compliment to God and the human who was the medium that help to make leave, water and sugar and maybe milk into this good old beverage that we love. You see I spoke of God – and you can think of Her as a Unity or Him as a Trinity or whatever you may like those are the personals which I don’t feel like preaching. But you see, going to a topic we started, distractions do make much of life a> You must educate yourself b> You must have sex c> You must be promiscuous d> You must stay monogamous e> You must have a life philosophy f> You must get a good job that makes loads of cash: well I am not saying those are not important but the 0.5% and 0.2% know that they might eventually become distractions. Why you may ask? It’s simple in the sense that we might lack the astronaut’s mind later on in life. I mean – let’s give it another dashing name – I mean curionaut – do you ever explore things that the threshold of popularity never beckoned? I’m not telling to go cannibal like Tooms or Lectar but have you done the daring? This does not equate always to sky-diving and monster trucks but in the sense of learning for the love of curiosities and knowledge.
This may come as self-perspectives and self-analysis and usually this process is autodidactical. I mean I’m not saying you will have a mentor but you might not be resistant to the fact that pilgrimages of such proportions also require your self’s cooperation nor else those beans won’t make a beanstalk. But that’s the thing. The mirror is not only narcissism or mutilation or ego formation (as Lacan might suggest) but it is a nexus of too many articles and such is the womb for much contemplation. You can devour your image and create the infamous/famous alter ego or even delve the finger and stone closer to the goblet of a wisdom that sought you since birth. Gradually the art may reveal itself to you and maybe yourself is under those reflective silky draperies of cut and flats.
Now look you are looking at me. Disappointed? Don’t be. I might have introduced to you something interesting after all haven’t I – so, will you doubt it now – can you not say I am an artist?

An Opinion On The State Of Women's Right In Bangladesh (ENG 440 Print Media Assignment: 541 words)
What is a woman? A woman is the “fairer-sex”, a “submissive”, an “inferior” thus must always be kept within boundaries: this seems to be the prevalent ideology that surrounds women. West or East does not do much to dismantle it – though the East has been romanticized as the nation of female mutilation/subjugation while the West its opposite, a statement from UN-Secretary, General Ban Ki-Moon, illustrates the truth:
“ Most societies prohibit such violence – yet the reality is that too often, it is covered up or tacitly condoned.”
Violence against females is omnipresent in the world be it in secular states or religious ones. The crimes against women are various: physical rape, emotional rape, acid burning, and flogging to preserve a religious belief – all these are happening on a global scale but are highlighted in developing countries such as Bangladesh.
Yesterday is an African woman. She is illiterate. She has a daughter and is a housewife. She finds out from a doctor that she has AIDS. As she is not promiscuous she decides to ask her husband to tell her the truth. Instead, he savagely beats her. Yesterday knows that death is imminent thus her only goal now is to give her daughter the education she could not have. Yesterday is the eponymous character of the African film Yesterday which was nominated for Best Foreign Film in 2005. Though the story is fictional and has an African setting the situation in Bangladesh is no different.
Despite the presence of social welfare gropus and women’s rights movements, violence persists – be it a rural setting or an urban one. “Setting” is important for many people have the misconception that urban women are “free”. They are not. Though some women are able to have a desired profession, their numbers do not thrive.
Basically, a woman must guard her modesty, refrain from being too social and must aspire to become a mother and a housewife: these limiting roles are still integrated into the young girls of today. A flexible lifestyle is inhibited by incorporating fears of religious immorality or social indecency. To a man, many restrictions do not apply. In fact, promiscuity in a man is many a times outrageously forgiven whereas in a woman it is taboo. This phenomenon is noticed in recent sex scandals: women who are shown in pornographic material are ousted by society despite the fact that some of these women have had no knowledge of being recorded in such situations. Their only crime is pre-marital sex. However, their male partners, who had shamelessly made profit by exposing their intimate acts, are never questioned for their actions.
The definition of a criminal is still limited to thief and murderer as a recent cover story of The Daily Star Weekend Magazine has shown that even in cases of rape and adultery the women are blamed regardless of $the situation or evidence stating otherwise.
I believe that women can only be free from such ludicrous biases when they are not looked down upon as the inferior sex. It is important to teach people that humans are equal regardless of what sex they are born with. So, we must celebrate both the sexes and not punish or reward anyone for being a man or women.
